How to Fix Drip Faucets in Cold Weather

Posted on April 4, 2022April 7, 2022 by Kevin

If you live in an area with cold weather, you might have noticed your faucet drip. However, this is a very common problem that can cost you money to repair. Fortunately, there are a few things that you can do to minimize the chances of having to deal with broken water pipes. Before determining what to do, read about the location and movement of water inside your pipes. Also, learn more about O-rings and valve seats.

Water movement through pipes

When the weather turns cold, you might want to consider using a drip faucet in your bathroom. This will ensure that your pipes are warm and that the water flows throughout without freezing. Additionally, dripping faucets can prevent your pipes from bursting. Here are some other benefits of using a drip faucet. The cold weather can cause water pipes to freeze and crack, resulting in a costly repair bill. Using a drip faucet is an easy and affordable way to protect your pipes from damage.

The water movement in a dripping faucet is regulated by a valve. The valve determines which direction the water flows in. The valve prevents the water from backtracking. A slow drip in normal pressure will ensure water doesn’t freeze in your pipes. Regardless of the type of faucet, the water movement through the pipes will be regulated to prevent damage to the pipes. If your water pressure is too low, you might need to consider installing a new pipe.

Location matters

Despite the convenience of installing a drip faucet, location is important when selecting the best one. Freezing temperatures can freeze water pipes, and these frozen pipes can become clogged and stop water flow. Not only do these pipes not allow water to flow, but they also have a higher chance of bursting, causing a costly problem. Luckily, drip faucets can help save money and water. Listed below are some of the advantages of installing a drip faucet.

If you are concerned about wasting water, choose a faucet that drips 5 to 10 drops per minute. However, make sure the faucet is far away from a source of water. If the faucet is located far from the source of water, it will not freeze. Because of the pressurized system, this faucet will not freeze. You can also choose to install one that drips only when needed. It’s important to keep in mind the location and how often you use it, because the exact location can make a difference.

O-rings

If your water faucet is dripping, chances are that the o-ring is leaking. Over time, this sealant may become damaged or cracked, causing the water to leak. O-rings are used in a variety of applications, including sealing liquid and gas lines. Replacing the o-ring is a fairly simple process and will fix your leak in no time. To begin, turn off the main water valve, and run the sink while replacing the o-ring.

To replace the O-rings on a compression faucet, unscrew the two screws that hold the seat washer in place. You can then use a small slotted screwdriver to unscrew the decorative cap from the handle and remove the packing nut. Loosen the stem from the body of the faucet with a small crescent wrench. Then, replace the seat washers. To do this, use a heat-proof plumber’s grease and gently twist out the old seat washer.

Valve seats

You might be wondering when to replace your drip faucet valve seats. While it’s possible to replace the metal valve seat on most faucets, you may have trouble removing the old valve seat. If this is the case, you can use a seat wrench to remove it. Afterward, you can install the new one. You should note that if you’re having trouble, you can also resurface the seat if it is too worn.

Dripping faucets are a sign of worn out faucet parts. Sometimes they are caused by small wear and tear such as a corroded valve, a worn o-ring, or even a misaligned faucet. A dripping faucet is the early symptom of a malfunctioning valve seat. As the valve seat corrodes, sediment from water can get trapped inside it, speeding up the process of deterioration. If the valve seat becomes corroded, the water will begin to leak, so you should replace it immediately.

Cartridges

Replace the cartridge in your drip faucet when you notice a drop in your water. If the faucet is leaking around the base or underneath the knobs, it may be time to replace the cartridge. You can purchase a replacement cartridge from the manufacturer, including Moen and Kraus, which are known for producing high-quality faucets. However, the price of a replacement cartridge may depend on several factors, including the cost of the parts and labor, and the location of the faucet.

In case of two-handle faucets, you should replace the cartridge in the side that is leaking. If you have to replace both sides, you must use a long socket that fits 17mm. The replacement cartridge should be compatible with the number of splines on the handle. After the replacement, the faucet will work fine once again. Replace the cartridges every year or so, as the water flow will be affected by the dripping.
